Ron Johnston, PhD, Executive Director of the Union
Roofing Contractors Association, brings a wide variety of experience and education to help promote the mission of URCA. He graduated from UCSB with a bachelor's, a master's and a Ph.D. He went directly into teaching the History of Western Civilization at Santa Monica College for 8 years and developed his own curriculum for teaching Russian History.
From
there, Johnston went to work for Jerry Buss, owner of the
Forum and the Los Angeles Lakers. Buss also owned the Los
Angeles Kings at that time. Johnston came on board with
the Forum as Vice President of Special Projects. For the
next eight years he was the Forum's spokesperson for any
involvement with the non-profit organizations which Dr.
Buss supported including the March of Dimes, the United
Negro College Fund, and the United Way.
He
was then hired on as President and CEO of the California
Asphalt Pavement Industry. Johnston developed a strong
background in construction as he spent the next eight
years involved with regulatory and legislative affairs
that affected the construction industry.
He was then recruited by the International Right of Way Association as Vice President of Marketing. This non-profit organization with 11,000 individual members in the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, and Australia, acquired the land and clearing title for new freeway, railroad, utility, and any multi-property rights-of-way. IRWA provided professional programs for members in land appraisals, acquisition/negotiation, engineering, environmental law, real estate law, property management, and relocation assistance.
Most
recently, Johnston has been involved with independent
consulting for association management and also worked
in financial services with New York Life and New England
Financial.

"Working
in Association Management allows me the opportunity to network
with many different organizations," Johnston said. "I
am continually interacting with non-profit organizations both
professionally and personally. I am still actively involved
with the March of Dimes and have also been introduced to a wonderful
organization-- the Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC),"
Dr. Johnston added.
Every Saturday and Sunday for several years, Johnston has played basketball with an unofficial league for "older guys" in the city of Orange. He also plays golf and tennis, but his favorite past-time, he admits, is spending time with his ten-year-old daughter, Kylie.
