Brad
Fielder, Vice President of Bligh Pacific and
URCA Chairman , is the only board member at this time that is
not the owner of the company that he represents. The owner Jay Bligh, has appointed Fielder to
represent the company.
Bligh Pacific
started in 1976. Jay Bligh has grown the company to its current
size, with 80 to 100 employees working on the high-end, more
difficult
roofing construction such as malls, and other
commercial/industrial projects.
"Our company has been a part of the union since it
started in 1976," Fielder explained. "We strongly feel
that for the quality we need in our work, we are able to attract
and retain more qualified roofing mechanics through the union.
"
Bligh
Pacific maintains a philosophy that the life span of a roofing
system is directly related to the quality of the application.
"A roof is not going
to last long if its not installed properly," Fielder
stated. "We feel we have the best quality. We are a family
company, and many of our employees have
been with us for years. We know their wives' and children's
names. Their level of compensation makes roofing a career, as
opposed to hiring workers
that are transitory non-skilled help. Our company benefits from
workers who are in a very positive environment and therefore do
a better job. "
Bligh
Pacific looks forward to a stronger partnership with the union
in creating a full time organization that supports union
contractors exclusively.

"I
would like to partner with the union," Fielder commented,
" our Executive Director, Ron Johnston, continuously meets
with our current members to make them more aware of the benefits
URCA has available for their employees and their families, with
architects, and owners to promote the qualities the union contractor
provides."
"Originally
we had focused on monitoring public works projects," Fielder
added, "Making sure that non-union contractors were not
paying lower than the prevailing wage rates in order to make
lower bids. Over the past two years we have changed the focus
of URCA toward improving our employees and contractors through
education and training. We need to continually ask 'how do we
get better?' We need to promote quality through partnership
with the union and educate contractors and clients about what
URCA has to offer."
