The
Temptation to do Good
LOS ANGELES, CA - 02/14//02 - With so many lives lost on September 11, 2001, the temptation to do good far exceeds the resistance to sit back and watch others pick up the pieces. The character of the American soul and persona to assist those in need during attack was tested after the events in Washington D.C. and New York.
In the case of a Southern California organization located 3,000 miles from Ground Zero and our Nation's capitol, the American character runs deep. The Union Roofing Contractors Association donated $25,000 to the Building and Construction Trades Department and the Greater New York Building and Construction Trades Council's Families' Relief Fund.
"We only have 26 members, but our compassion is strong, says
Bradford Fielder, chairman of the board of directors for the URCA.
"There is a great mental and physical burden on the families
of the deceased. We aim to relieve some of that burden,"
says Fielder.
Sixty-one members of the Building and Construction Trades Organization lost their lives on September 11. Shortly thereafter, the relief fund was set-up. "We realized there was an immediate need to assist the families," said Edward Malloy, president of the Greater New York Building and Construction Trades Council. "All of the 61 families have already or shall receive over $30,000. The URCA among others have been truly generous," adds Malloy.
The Union Roofing Contractors Association's board of directors convened shortly after September 11 and unanimously voted to assist their brethren on the east coast. "We feel we could make a difference," said Mr. Fielder. "Besides, the temptation to do good for those in need was overwhelming."
